Hmmm, is there such a word as 'After-Look'??   Yuppie, there is ... me thinks I just gave birth to it ....

I received a hysterically funny email from my Auntie Ava Jean in Houston yesterday, describing the  'After-Look'  of hurricane Ike at her house and the neighborhood, etc.    Thank heavens she and my cousins in Houston are OK.   She said Ike was a doozie of a storm ... it took the exact same path as the hurricane in 1900 that orphaned my grandfather in Galveston.   Auntie's house survived Ike with no major damage, however the morning after Ike passed through she discovered her dining room table and all 12 chairs were gone.   She looked all over for them and found them all hanging from a tree outside.   Lots of trees had blown all over, and a tree was in her swimming pool.   She told me she needed to take a crash course in tire repairs because her car had a flat tire, resulting from driving over branches and sharp objects.   I told her to call AAA and ask them to come out and put the spare tire on for her.  She did not say anything about my Uncle Herb's art studio.   It's got lots of floor-to-ceiling windows -- if his studio had been damaged, including his artworks inside ... well, that is absolutely unthinkable!   I assume the studio came through OK.   Her next door neighbor's house was not as lucky as my Auntie's house .... a large tree had fallen on their roof, punching a big hole in it and the ceiling in the kitchen.  Oy!   Auntie said that after Ike whipped out of town a bunch of neighbors came over for a freezer party, and they cooked up steaks, sausages, shrimp, roasts, chicken -- anything that had been in freezers but were beginning to thaw out because of loss of power ... and one of the party guests was in charge of making margueritas for everyone.   Apparently they all had a real swell time, celebrating the fact they survived Ike.   I had thought maybe Auntie and my cousins had evacuated Houston prior to the storm and gathered at my cousin Hilary's house in Austin until it was safe to return home ... but I was wrong.   They all decided to stay put in Houston and hunker down until Ike passed through ..... mighty courageous of them ... I'd have been on the first train out of there headed anywhere that Ike was not ....

Corey, I'm so glad that your Aunt and Uncle weathered the storm with not much damage.  I really like the idea of the freezer party!  It sounds like they all are doing well.

That's a long time to be without power.  How did you fare?  Did you have to leave?
