While discussing restaurants for our upcoming Disney World vacations, a coworker mentioned that her family had enjoyed Il Mulino on a previous trip.  Since my husband and I were going to be staying at the Swan where Il Mulino is located, we decided that it would be the perfect place for dinner to celebrate our anniversary.

Il Mulino

Through the double door entry is a cool, contemporary bar area.  Opposite the bar are some high top tables and lounge type seating.  If you are staying at the Swan you can sign up for text message offers.  One day the offer was for 50% off cocktails at the Il Mulino bar from 4 – 6 PM.  I wasn’t around to take advantage of that offer, but I really like the feel of this space and plan on stopping by for a cool drink on our next visit.

Il Mulino

Dividing the bar area from the dining area is this large unit featuring the essentials in an Italian restaurant – wine, olive oil, pasta, etc.!

Il Mulino

The wood floors and brick walls give the dining room its comfortable appeal, while the sleek chairs and funky lighting give it a modern twist.

We had early, 5:00, dinner reservations.  The restaurant only begins serving at that time so we were treated to a very relaxed and quiet atmosphere.  Most welcome after an August day touring the parks!  We only requested water to drink, which was promptly brought out.  Our water glasses never got lower than half filled before being quickly replenished.  Next came another server, this time with hot towels with which to cleanse our hands.

This was followed by a complimentary eggplant appetizer.  I took a small taste, but I’m just not a fan of eggplant.  My husband enjoyed it though.

I was saving room for dinner so I didn’t order an appetizer, but my husband got Gamberi al Mulino, aka shrimp cocktail!  I’ve seen this appetizer with anywhere from 3 -6 shrimp, but I’ve never seen one with shrimp this big!  Five jumbo shrimp with a very tasty sauce.

I have to give a bit of a warning on the next few pictures.  I was getting hungry and everything looked and smelled so wonderful that I kept forgetting to snap a picture before digging in!

This is the ‘after’ picture of our bread basket.  Nice, fresh Italian bread and crisp focaccia.  Our server told us in advance that there were red pepper flakes on the focaccia.  I loved the wonderful kick it provided!

Il Mulino

Once again I started to dig in before getting a picture!  This is the Spaghetti al Frutti di Mare with the spicy red sauce.  The seafood (shrimp, 4 clams, mussels, and calamari) had been artfully arranged on top of the spaghetti when it was served!  The taste was terrific and there was a fair amount of seafood, but… I don’t feel that there was enough to justify the $32 price of this pasta dish.

Il Mulino

My husband had the Pollo Fra Diavolo.  This consisted of chicken, sausage, broccoli, and zucchini in a spicy red sauce.  It was thoroughly enjoyed!  Being that Il Mulino is an Italian restaurant, I was a bit surprised that this dish didn’t come on or with a small amount of spaghetti or some type of pasta.  None the less, the price for this dish was a more realistic $24.

Il Mulino

We were quite stuffed after our meals but decided to split dessert any way!  This was the sorbet trio – berry, orange (tasted just like a Creamsicle, yum!), and apricot.  The creamy scoops were huge and more than enough to satisfy both of us.

Il Mulino

Dinner ends with a complimentary glass of Limoncello.  Yes, there was more in the glass to start with!

Il Mulino

As you can see, we left Il Mulino full and quite happy.  Prices can be a bit steep, but we enjoyed our meals.  The service was excellent.  We had a total of three servers wait on us, and even the manager walked around the room stopping at each table.  The atmosphere was cool, comfortable, and casual.  For a nice dinner or a special occasion, I would recommend Il Mulino.
