At Disney World, in addition to resort pools, there are three themed water parks to make your ‘getting wet’ dreams come true:) Typhoon Lagoon is 56 acres big and full of tropical foliage in and amidst a variety of water activities. Every themed venue at Disney World has a ‘story’ to go with the theming. For Typhoon Lagoon, the story goes like this…..

Legend has it that this was once the Placid Palms resort – until a typhoon raged through this sleepy hideaway, flooding the lagoon and tossing ships about. In its wake, sharks were discovered in the harbor and surfboards were found in the trees as well as ships everywhere. Most amazing was the Miss Tilly shrimp boat, lodged firmly at the top of a volcanic mountain. The mountain, to this day, continuously (about once every hour) tries to dislodge the ship with a huge plume of water:) Disney was able to turn the waterfalls, rapids, pools, and surf left by the misfortune of a typhoon into a happy place for families to cavort, The Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. See how that is?
Any bus headed towards Downtown Disney will make a stop at Typhoon Lagoon, and there are towels for rent as well as beach towels for sale. Beach shoes are a good idea if hot or slick surfaces are a source of discomfort (These can be purchased at the park as well with Mickey on them). Arrive at opening or late in the afternoon unless long waits is ok by you. Cloudy days are also good choices for shorter lines at Typhoon Lagoon. Water parks are one themed area that Disney allows picnics to be brought by guests. There are few restaurant options, all basic counter service; if bringing a picnic is an option, do consider it! Unless this is a day for lying in the sun, be prepared for a good workout – every slide has a climb :)
